We test all of our breeding cats for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV). We also utilize genetic testing using the Optimal Selection Feline Genetic Breeding Analysis to screen for several genetic abnormalities. Links to the genetic testing results of our cats are available on the “Our Cats” page. We research the pedigrees of our breeding cats to ensure that our kings and queens are as genetically diverse as possible. Although Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in pedigrees cannot be completely accounted for, we are committed to responsible breeding practices to reduce the risk of HCM in all of our lines. Our breeding cats are screened by ultrasound for HCM annually.
We are proud that our cattery has tested
negative for the following diseases and parasites:
- HCM (heart)
- FiV / FeLV (Immunodeficiency / Leukemia)
- PK-Deficiency (anemia)
- PRA-b (progressive retinal atrophy of the eyes)
- Trichomonas (intestinal parasites)
- Giardia (intestinal parasites)
- Coccidiosis (intestinal parasites)
Abyssinian Kittens Cattery© is a “Health-Focused Program” (HFP). We have tested and are a FIP/FeLV free (negative) cattery, including PK-Deficiency, PRA tested, and feel it is important as a responsible breeder to regularly screen for HCM from a “Board Certified Feline Cardiologist” (BCFC) for “Ultrasound Heart Screens” (UHS). No line is safe or clear from this HCM feline disease. We at Abyssinian Kittens Cattery© feel screening lessens the odds of our breeding kittens/cats to help ensure the best and healthiest possible offspring. We take every precaution with our breeding practices to greatly reduce the risk of future health issues … Our mission is to go above and beyond in our Program at the front end to make sure the placement to you is successful. We are confident you would agree that our philosophy is worth it.
